As we are in the height of the Holiday season, and winter has arrived, we thought it might be good to review three specific personal insurance coverage’s which you may need for the month of December. You will need these personal insurance coverage’s all year around, but claims tend to increase in the winter months.
Personal Umbrella Insurance. Umbrella Insurance provides extra protection, or limits, above the liability insurance (home and auto) you currently have. Just as an umbrella protects you from heavy rain, an Umbrella Insurance policy protects you from losing the entirety of your wealth and assets in the event of a claim. Your risks increase in the winter due to harsher weather, which can cause more serious auto accidents. You probably also host holiday parties where your guests may be injured.
Flood. Flood insurance is not covered under your homeowner’s insurance. The winter months are a prime time for flooding caused by rain and snow. Melting snow in the spring is another time when your flood risk increases.
Jewelry. A majority of high end gifts such as jewelry, guns, art, and other collectables are purchased during the Holiday season. These items are not automatically covered under your homeowner’s insurance. Most homeowner’s insurance policies have limitations of around $1,200 per item (these may vary, so review your policy). A “floater” endorsement can be added which provides coverage, including theft, for your collections or other high end property.
